What is the same, what is different
Both run locally in a terminal, understand the repository, change files, run commands and tests, and need the user's own official account. Both also offer IDE extensions and desktop or cloud surfaces.
They differ in the underlying models, in accounts and billing (Claude Code uses Claude subscriptions or the Anthropic API; Codex uses ChatGPT plans or the OpenAI API), in how permissions and approvals are designed, in configuration files and in integrations. Features ship weekly on both sides, so this page gives no fixed ranking; check the official docs for current details.
A fair test on one machine
- Pick an authorized real project. Run its existing tests and note the starting commit.
- Prepare two or three clearly scoped tasks: fix a reproducible bug, add a small feature, write tests for one module.
- Create a separate branch (or git worktree) for each tool and give both the identical task text.
- Record time to completion, how often you had to intervene, test results and code-review findings.
- Check the actual bills for subscription or API usage on each side.
Running both on the same Mac removes differences in hardware, network and dependency versions.
Rolling out to a team
Many teams do not bet on one tool: one Mac per developer, each using the agent they prefer, with shared code review and CI as the gate. Keeping machine, accounts and project permissions separate also makes handovers easier when people change.
Annual orders of 5 or more Macs get a further 2.5% off the first year. For bulk configuration, contracts or a separate quote, contact wodeMac.

FAQ
Which is better, Claude Code or Codex?
There is no answer that holds for every project. Run the same tasks on the same project and machine and compare result quality, human intervention and real cost.
Can one Mac have both Claude Code and Codex?
Yes. A wodeMac dedicated Mac mini ships with both preinstalled; each signs in with your own account.
Do I need two accounts to compare them?
Yes. Claude Code uses an Anthropic account or API key, Codex uses an OpenAI account or API key, both held by you or your company under each provider's rules.
